TULSA, Okla. — A convicted felon was arrested after allegedly stealing a customer's handgun from a holster inside a Tulsa convenience store and fleeing the scene, according to the Tulsa Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 1:42 p.m. on June 12, 2026, to a larceny call at the QuikTrip located at 1415 East 71st Street South in the South Peoria area.

According to investigators, the victim was selecting a drink from the fountain area and later standing in line to pay when an unknown suspect approached from behind and removed a Springfield XD 9mm pistol from a holster attached to the victim's hip.

Police said the holster did not have a retention device.

The suspect immediately ran from the store with the firearm. The victim followed outside and observed the suspect enter a gold-colored SUV, which then fled westbound from the location.

Using resources from the Tulsa Police Department's Real Time Information Center, officers quickly developed leads on both the vehicle and the suspect.

Investigators identified the suspect as 39-year-old Aaron Deshawn Clayton and tracked him to a residence near 61st Street and Quincy Avenue.

While officers were canvassing the area, they observed Clayton leave the residence and ride away on a bicycle. Police described his behavior as frantic. Officers detained him without incident.

A search of the residence led to the recovery of a light blue trucker-style hat consistent with one seen in surveillance images from the QuikTrip.

The stolen firearm was not recovered during the search.

Authorities noted that Clayton has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Clayton was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on charges of Larceny From a Person After Former Conviction of a Felony and Possession of a Firearm After Former Conviction of a Felony.

Investigators continue searching for the stolen handgun, and the case remains under investigation.
