OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Oklahoma has named Oklahoma City Police Sergeant Keaton Zerby its 2026 Hometown Hero in recognition of his courageous actions during a neighborhood emergency last year.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the recognition honors Sgt. Zerby's response during the early morning hours of Aug. 23, 2025, when he discovered a neighboring law enforcement vehicle engulfed in flames.

Officials said ammunition inside the burning vehicle had begun exploding, creating an immediate danger to nearby homes and residents.

Despite the risk, Zerby helped evacuate residents, protected the family of a deputy sheriff who lived nearby, and alerted neighbors as the fire threatened to spread through the neighborhood.

Fire investigators later concluded that Zerby's quick actions likely saved lives.

The award is part of the nationwide celebration marking America's 250th birthday, during which United States Attorneys' Offices across the country are recognizing individuals whose actions demonstrate exceptional public service, courage, and dedication to their communities.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Zerby's selflessness, decisive actions, and commitment to helping others exemplify the "Oklahoma Standard" and represent the very best of law enforcement service.
