TULSA, Okla. — City leaders and community partners gathered to mark the start of a major outdoor project that will bring more than 13 miles of new trails to West Tulsa.
The trail system, located near the Gilcrease Museum, will span approximately 460 acres and include hiking and mountain biking paths designed for all skill levels. The project stretches across both sides of 33rd West Avenue and aims to expand access to outdoor recreation and connect residents with nature.
“This project is about access and connecting people to the outdoors, to opportunity, and to spaces that bring people together,” Mayor Monroe Nichols said.
The $3.5 million project will be funded entirely through private donations, including support from the Zink Family Foundation, William S. Smith Charitable Trust, The Helmerich Trust, and individual contributors.
The trail system is a partnership between Bike Club Tulsa, Gilcrease Museum, and the University of Tulsa, with construction led by Humble Sons Bike Company and Rogue Trails. Tulsa Parks will oversee long-term maintenance.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, starting on the west side of the property. The first phase will include a gravel parking area for visitors. Additional phases will expand the trails to the east side, with the full system anticipated to open in early 2027.
“Investing in trails and outdoor spaces in this community helps close the gaps created by years of unequal infrastructure and amenity investments,” said District 1 City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper.
The project will add to Tulsa’s existing network of more than 100 miles of trails and is designed to support recreation, health, and community engagement. Plans also include seasonal and permanent art installations reflecting the cultural and natural significance of the Gilcrease area.
“The addition of these trails continues to build on Tulsa’s growing network of outdoor spaces,” said Tulsa Parks Director Anna America.
Project leaders say the initiative will also provide opportunities for youth engagement and outdoor education through local cycling and trail-building programs.
The development represents a continued investment in public-private partnerships and expanding access to recreational spaces across Tulsa. Use TulsaParks.RecDesk.com for updates on the project.
