OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A 27-year-old Oklahoma City man with multiple prior felony convictions has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after a jury found him guilty of illegally possessing a firearm and attempting to persuade a witness to lie to investigators.

Isael Antonio Ortiz was sentenced July 27 by U.S. District Judge Patrick R. Wyrick to 120 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Oklahoma.

The case stems from an October 14, 2024, incident in which Oklahoma City police responded to a report of an assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to court records, the victim told officers Ortiz struck the victim's vehicle outside a local business, shattering the driver's-side window, before displaying a long-barreled firearm from his waistband. After noticing a surveillance camera, Ortiz fled the scene.

Officers later located Ortiz at his residence, where they detained him, executed a search warrant and recovered the firearm.

While in custody, prosecutors said Ortiz repeatedly attempted to tamper with a witness by making phone calls, sending text messages and communicating through third parties. Authorities said he tried to persuade the witness to falsely claim ownership of the firearm and tell investigators Ortiz did not know it was inside the residence.

A federal grand jury indicted Ortiz on Jan. 6, 2026, on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and witness tampering. A federal jury convicted him on both counts on Feb. 10, 2026.

During sentencing, Judge Wyrick cited the need to protect the public and deter future criminal conduct, noting that Ortiz had brandished a firearm during the incident and has an extensive criminal history.

According to public records, Ortiz's prior felony convictions include:

• Eluding a police officer in Canadian County in 2018.

• Use of a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon, drive-by shooting, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in Oklahoma County in 2019.

• Rioting, second-degree attempted arson and malicious injury to property in Oklahoma County in 2020.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Oklahoma City Police Department.

The prosecution was handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laney Ellis and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary E. Walters.
