TULSA, Okla. — A 33-year-old man faces charges of first-degree rape, kidnapping, and burglary after Tulsa police officers kicked down an apartment door to rescue a woman being held hostage and assaulted with broken glass, authorities reported.

33-year-old Ryan Ward was taken into custody on Saturday night, August 8, 2026, at the Brighton Park apartment complex near 51st Street and Darlington Avenue.

Forced Entry and Victim Rescue

Tulsa Police officers responded to the complex around 9:38 p.m. following emergency calls reporting a woman screaming for help from inside a unit. Upon arrival, responding officers heard distress cries coming from within the apartment. After announcing their presence and hearing further screams, officers kicked open the front door.

Inside, officers located Ward standing next to the severely injured victim. The woman’s face was covered in blood, and she reported having difficulty seeing due to significant head lacerations alongside multiple injuries across her body. Paramedics transported her to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Alleged Sexual Assault and Glass Attack

The victim informed investigators that she had met Ward just one day prior and had no previous romantic relationship with him.

She told officers that Ward had sexually assaulted her earlier in the day before leaving the premises. Ward later returned and forced his way back into her apartment. When she attempted to open the front door to escape, Ward blocked her path and smashed a nearby cabinet. He then used broken glass from the cabinet to cut her and held her down on the floor until police breached the door.

Suspect Overdose and Pending Charges

Officers took Ward into custody at the scene, noting that he was acting erratically and speaking incoherently. Shortly after his arrest, Ward began exhibiting signs of a drug overdose.

Paramedics transported Ward to a medical facility, where hospital staff admitted him for treatment. Police stated that upon receiving medical clearance, Ward will be transferred and booked into the Tulsa County Jail on the following charges:

• Kidnapping

• First-Degree Burglary
